What Callers Do After They Hit Your Voicemail, According to Two Surveys

Owners comfort themselves with a picture of the caller who reaches voicemail: the person leaves a name and number, waits patiently, and books when the office calls back. Two recent consumer surveys describe a different person.

Most callers do not leave a message

CallRail surveyed U.S. consumers in 2025 and found that only 42% said they leave a voicemail when a business does not answer. The rest hang up. In the same survey, 82% said they would call a competitor instead. Read those two figures together and the voicemail box stops looking like a safety net. It is a partial record of the minority who bothered, while the majority leave no trace at all.

A YouGov survey of 2,046 UK adults, commissioned by the answering service Answer4u and published in June 2026, points the same way. Just 6% of respondents said they would leave a voicemail rather than wait for an answer. Nearly a quarter, 24%, said they would switch to another contact method instead of waiting. Different country, different survey, same behavior: people treat an unanswered phone as a closed door.

What the hang-up callers do next

The CallRail figure on competitor calls is stated intent, and stated intent always runs a little ahead of real behavior. Discount it if you like. Even at half strength, the pattern is expensive for any business that paid for the call through ads, a directory listing, or a referral. That caller arrived ready to talk. The next business on the list answered, and readiness moved with the caller.

Some hang-up callers do come back. Existing customers with a relationship, a patient mid-treatment, a client with an open matter, will usually try again or send a message. The caller you lose permanently is the new one, and new callers are the ones growth depends on. That asymmetry is why businesses underestimate the problem. The phones feel busy, regulars keep getting through eventually, and the missing new business leaves no evidence.

The callback window is shorter than you think

For the minority who do leave a message, the callback has to be fast and it has to reach them. We looked at the recovery math in voicemail callback rates vs. AI answering, and the practical lesson is unglamorous: a callback the next morning competes with the competitor who answered last night. If your team returns messages, set a target in minutes during business hours and measure it for a month. Most offices discover their real average is far slower than the policy on paper.

There is also a cheap partial fix. A missed-call text sent within minutes catches some of the hang-up callers while they are still holding the phone. The mechanics are covered in how the five-minute follow-up rule works. It will not rescue everyone, and it does nothing for the caller who needed a conversation, but it turns some silent hang-ups into threads you can answer.

What to do with this

Stop counting voicemail messages as your missed-call problem. Count unanswered calls in the phone log instead, including the ones that left nothing. Then decide what answers those calls: a rotation, an answering service, an AI receptionist, or some mix. The surveys suggest the worst option on the menu is the one most small businesses still run by default, a greeting and a beep.
