How AI Receptionist Pricing Scales When Your Call Volume Grows

Your first tier is a teaser

Almost every AI receptionist vendor prices the entry plan to look cheap and the top plan to look scary. The truth lives in the middle tiers, where your bill actually lands once the business grows. Here is how costs move as call volume climbs, using real published 2026 prices, so you can spot the tier where your vendor starts charging you growth tax.

100 calls a month: the starter zone

At roughly 100 calls a month, AI is comfortably cheap. Quo’s Sona covers 100 calls for $49 a month. Rosie’s $49 plan gives you 250 minutes, which covers 100 calls averaging two and a half minutes. Smith.ai’s AI free tier covers the first 25 calls, and its $150 plan covers 75. RingCentral’s $49 plan covers 100 minutes, fine if your calls stay short. In this zone, any vendor works and the differences are about features, not money.

250 to 500 calls a month: the squeeze begins

This is where billing units start biting. On Quo’s Sona, 250 calls fit the $99 tier. On Rosie, 500 calls at three minutes each is 1,500 minutes, which needs the $299 2,000-minute plan. On Smith.ai AI, 300 calls is the $500 plan. On Goodcall’s per-caller model, 250 unique callers sits past the $79 starter and into the $129 growth tier, but repeat callers stay free, so a business with loyal repeat callers pays less here than anywhere else. If your calls average four minutes instead of two, minute-bundled plans punish you and call-bundled plans barely notice. This is the zone to check your average call length before you pick a side; our cost-per-call breakdown walks through the math.

1,000 calls a month: the human wall

At 1,000 calls a month, AI still works and humans get painful. Rosie’s 2,000-minute plan at $299 covers 1,000 two-minute calls. LegalClerk AI’s $400 flat unlimited plan does not care how many calls come in. Slang.ai’s $399 per-location plan was built for exactly this kind of restaurant volume. But a human service at this volume is a different universe: Smith.ai’s live plans top out at $2,100 for 300 calls, so 1,000 calls would mean overage at $8.50 a call on top of everything else. Ruby’s biggest published plan is $1,725 for 500 minutes, and 1,000 calls at three minutes each is 3,000 minutes, six times that allowance. Past a few hundred calls, per-call and per-minute human pricing stops being a service and starts being a second payroll.

The tier jumps nobody warns you about

Watch for the cliff between tiers. Smith.ai AI jumps from $150 for 75 calls to $500 for 300 calls: if you take 90 calls, you are paying the $500 tier or bleeding overage. Rosie jumps from $149 (1,000 minutes) to $299 (2,000 minutes): at 1,100 minutes you pay double. And per-minute plans have a second hidden jump: overage rates. RingCentral’s $0.50-a-minute overage sounds small until you realize 200 overage minutes is $100 on top of a $49 plan. Before signing anything, model your volume at 50 percent above today, not at today, because overage fees are priced for the vendor’s benefit, not yours.

How to buy for growth, not for today

Three rules. First, pick the billing unit that matches your call shape: long varied calls favor per-call or unlimited-minute plans; short predictable calls favor minute bundles. Second, ask every vendor two questions before you sign: what happens the month I exceed my plan, and can I change tiers mid-cycle without penalty. Third, re-audit every quarter. Most businesses that complain about their AI receptionist bill are not on the wrong vendor; they are on last year’s tier. If your volume is spread across branches, read our guide to multi-location pricing before you multiply a single-location plan.
