How Answering Services Price Their Plans: Per-Call, Per-Minute, and Unit Billing Explained

Why quotes for the same calls vary by 10x

Get three answering service quotes and you will get three numbers that look like they describe different businesses. They do not. They describe different billing models. Traditional answering services price your calls in four ways, and which one you are quoted decides your bill more than the vendor’s brand does.

1. Per-minute bundles

The most common model for human services. You buy a bucket of minutes each month and pay extra for anything over. Live answering runs roughly $0.75 to $1.75 a minute in 2026, with monthly bundles of 100 to 750 minutes priced $150 to $1,200. Ruby’s published plans run $250 for 50 minutes up to $1,725 for 500 minutes. AnswerConnect’s Growth plan is $395 for 300 minutes with overage around $1.85 a minute. MAP Communications offers $179 for 125 minutes or a $49 base plus $1.37 a minute. The catch is rounding: most vendors round each call up to the next minute, so a 45-second call bills as a full minute, and some count agent after-call work on the meter too. Short calls make this model expensive fast.

2. Per-call bundles

You pay for a number of calls, and duration does not matter. Smith.ai’s live receptionists use this: $300 a month for 30 calls, $810 for 90, $2,100 for 300, with overage from $8.50 to $11.50 a call depending on tier. ReceptionHQ is $25 plus $1.99 per call. Per-call suits businesses whose calls run long or vary wildly in length, because a twelve-minute intake costs the same as a two-minute message. It punishes the opposite pattern: a flood of short calls burns through your bundle while the vendor barely works. Smith.ai argues the model saves you money because agents do not rush callers off the phone, which is true, and also convenient for Smith.ai, which is worth remembering.

3. Pay-as-you-go

No bundle, just a meter. For AI answering, pay-as-you-go runs about $0.15 to $0.24 a minute with no monthly fee; for human answering, expect a $25 to $65 base plus $2 to $5 a minute. This is the right model for seasonal or unpredictable volume, a business that takes 20 calls in February and 200 in June. The trade-off is the rate: the per-unit price is always worse than a bundle, so steady volume should buy the bundle.

4. Flat rate for unlimited use

One price, no meter. In AI answering, flat unlimited plans start around $20 a month at the budget end and run to $199 and beyond for serious platforms; LegalClerk AI charges law firms $400 a month flat for unlimited calls with no overages. Industry comparisons put the break-even for a dedicated flat-rate human agent at roughly 1,400 minutes a month: below that, metered plans or AI win, and an honest provider will tell you so. Flat pricing is the only model where your busy month costs the same as your slow month, which is either a bargain or a waste depending on your volume.

How AI vendors fit the same four models

AI answering services use the same four shapes at a fraction of the price. Per-minute AI bundles run $165 to about $1,300 a month (Abby Connect is $165 for 100 AI minutes). Per-call AI bundles run $25 to $200-plus (Quo’s Sona starts at $25 for 40 calls; Smith.ai AI is $150 for 75). Pay-as-you-go AI is $0.15 to $0.24 a minute. Flat unlimited AI starts around $20 a month. If a quote seems impossibly cheap, check which model it uses before you celebrate; a $25-a-month plan with a $5-a-minute overage is not cheap at 200 minutes. Our answering service decision framework helps you weigh AI against human on more than price.

Questions that expose the real price

When a vendor quotes you, ask these before you sign anything. What is the billing increment, and is after-call work metered? What is the overage rate, in writing? Are appointment booking, payment collection, and CRM integration included or per-call add-ons? Is there a setup fee, and what does it cover? AnswerConnect lists a $49.99 setup fee on some plans; most AI vendors charge nothing, which is worth confirming rather than assuming. What happens on holiday and weekend calls, surcharges or standard rate? And how do I leave: month to month, or an annual term with an auto-renewal clause? Vendors that answer all six cleanly are usually the ones whose bills match their quotes. For the full comparison worksheet, see our quote comparison worksheet.
