Can You Keep Your Business Number? Porting and Forwarding Explained

Your business number is on your trucks, your cards, your website, your Google listing, and in the phones of a hundred past customers. The thought of giving it up to switch to an AI receptionist stops a lot of owners cold. Good news: you don’t have to. Keeping your number is standard, and there are two ways to do it. Here’s how each works and which one fits your situation.

Option 1: Porting your number

Porting means moving your existing number from your current phone provider to the AI receptionist’s phone service. After the port, the number lives with the new provider. Callers dial the same number they’ve always dialed; nothing changes for them.

The process is straightforward but not instant. You submit a port request with your account details from your current carrier, the losing carrier confirms the release, and the number moves over. It usually takes a few days to a couple of weeks depending on the carriers involved. During the transition, calls still reach you through the old provider, so there’s no downtime as long as you don’t cancel the old service before the port completes.

That last point is worth repeating: do not cancel your current phone service until the port is confirmed complete. Cancel early and you can lose the number.

Option 2: Call forwarding

Forwarding keeps your number exactly where it is. You set your current phone line to forward incoming calls to a new number that the AI receptionist answers on. Your carrier still owns the number; the AI service just receives the forwarded calls.

This is the faster option. Forwarding can be set up in minutes through your carrier, and you can turn it off just as fast if you change your mind. It’s also the lower-commitment option: if you try an AI receptionist for a month and don’t like it, you disable forwarding and you’re back where you started, number untouched.

The tradeoff is that you’re paying for two services during the trial, and forwarded calls sometimes show the forwarding number on caller ID rather than the original caller’s number, depending on the carrier. Ask your AI receptionist vendor how they handle caller ID on forwarded calls before you set it up.

Which one should you choose?

Forwarding is the right starting point for almost everyone. It lets you test the service with zero risk to your number, and you can switch to porting later once you’re committed. Porting makes sense when you’re sure about the provider and you want a single bill and a single point of contact for your phone service.

One more consideration: some businesses keep their existing carrier for outbound calls and staff mobiles, and only route inbound customer calls through the AI. Forwarding supports this naturally. Porting moves everything. Think about whether you want that before you decide.

What about your other numbers?

Most businesses have more than one number in the wild: a main line, maybe a second line for a location, tracking numbers on ads, the owner’s mobile on old business cards. You can forward or port all of them to the same AI receptionist. The AI can even greet callers differently based on which number they dialed, so the ad-tracking number gets a greeting that matches the ad.

Take an afternoon and list every number that’s out there. Old numbers on directory listings and review sites keep ringing for years. Routing them all to one system means none of them go to a dead line. For a sense of what the whole setup costs, see what an AI receptionist actually costs and virtual receptionist pricing.

Common worries, answered

Will callers notice a difference?

They’ll notice they’re talking to an AI instead of a person, but the number itself works exactly the same. Dialing, ringing, and connecting all behave normally. Most vendors let the AI identify itself or use a name, depending on your preference.

Can I port a number from a mobile carrier?

Usually yes. Mobile numbers port the same way landlines and VoIP numbers do. The main requirement is that the number is active and the account is in good standing. Numbers tied to some bundled business contracts can have restrictions, so check with your carrier first.

What if I want to leave the AI service later?

Your number is yours. If you ported it in, you can port it out to another provider the same way. If you forwarded, you just turn off forwarding. Reputable vendors don’t hold numbers hostage, but it’s worth confirming the port-out process before you port in. Get it in writing.

Does forwarding hurt call quality?

A forwarded call takes one extra hop, which can add a fraction of a second of latency. In practice, callers don’t notice. What matters more is the AI service’s own call quality and the reliability of your carrier’s forwarding, both of which you can test during a trial.

What about text messages to my business number?

This one catches people out. If customers text your business number, make sure the AI service supports SMS on ported or forwarded numbers. Some do, some don’t, and losing text capability silently is a real risk. Ask explicitly, and test it with your own phone before launch. Businesses that rely on texting should also look at what “free” AI receptionist plans actually cost you, since SMS is often where the catches hide.

The bottom line

You keep your business number either way. Start with call forwarding: it’s instant, reversible, and lets you test the service without touching your carrier relationship. Port the number later if you decide to commit. Either way, list every number you have out in the wild, confirm SMS support, and never cancel the old service until a port is fully complete.
